1. What we collect
Your account
- Email address and a securely hashed password, or the account ID from Discord, Google or X if you sign in with one of them.
- Username and display name.
- Date of birth, used to work out your age: you must be 16 or older, and members under 18 get extra protections (see section 6).
Your profile (you choose what to fill in)
- Profile picture, banner, bio, species/fursona, pronouns, gender identity, orientation (adults only), interests, characters and links to your other social accounts.
- Your status and online/last-seen time (you can hide these in Settings > Privacy).
Your location
- Your device's precise location, when you allow it, to place your pin on the map, find furs and events near you, and work out distances.
- Other members never see your exact location. The map shows a “fuzzed” position moved randomly within the privacy radius you choose (members under 18 always have at least 2 km). Ghost Mode hides your pin completely.
- Live location (the radar, fursuit partner pairing and suiting mode) only runs when you turn it on, and on Android shows a notification with a Stop button while it's sharing.
What you post and send
- Posts, comments, reactions, art board uploads, stickers, music you upload, events and groups you create, and messages in direct messages, group chats and communities.
- Photos, videos and audio you choose to upload. Voice channels are live audio between the people in the channel; FurMap doesn't record them.
How you use FurMap
- Follows, friends, likes, boops, event RSVPs, rewards and XP, notifications and your settings.
- Technical information: IP address, browser or app version, and a push notification token for each device where you turn notifications on.
- If you file a support ticket, the details you write and, if you leave it ticked, basic diagnostics about your device and browser.
Commissions
- Artists who take commissions can add a PayPal.me name or payment link. Payments happen on PayPal or Stripe, not on FurMap; we never see card or bank details.
2. Why we use it
- To run FurMap: your account, the map, feeds, messages, events, communities, music and notifications.
- To keep people safe: spam and abuse detection, automatic filters, reports and moderation, and protecting minors.
- To translate posts, suggest tags and answer help questions with AI models that run on FurMap's own servers. Your content isn't sent to outside AI companies and isn't used to train their models.
- To fix bugs, improve features and keep the service secure, and when the law requires it.
3. Who can see what
| Information | Who sees it |
|---|---|
| Profile, posts, art and your fuzzed map pin | Other members (and visitors, for public posts), subject to your privacy settings and blocks |
| Exact location | No one. It's only used on our servers to calculate distances |
| Direct messages and group chats | The people in the conversation. Moderators can review messages that are reported to them |
| Community messages | Members of that community and its moderators |
| Email, date of birth, IP address | Only FurMap's administrators, when needed to run the service or keep it safe |
4. Services we use
We don't sell or rent personal data and we don't share it for advertising. Some information passes through these services so FurMap can work:
- Cloudflare – network protection and delivery for furmap.org (sees IP addresses and requests).
- Google Firebase Cloud Messaging, Apple Push Notification service and your browser's push service – deliver notifications (the notification text and a device token).
- Discord, Google and X – only if you choose to sign in or link them.
- OpenStreetMap / Nominatim and CARTO – map tiles and address search (your device or our server requests the map area or the search text).
- DiceBear – generates a default picture from your name until you upload your own.
- PayPal and Stripe – only when you pay an artist through their link, under PayPal's or Stripe's own privacy policies.
- Outside sites you open from FurMap (art and music sources, convention websites) have their own privacy policies.
We may disclose information when the law requires it, to respond to valid legal requests, or to protect someone's safety, including reporting child sexual abuse material to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (see our Child Safety Standards).
5. Your choices and rights
- Permissions: location, notifications and camera are only requested when you choose to turn on something that needs them, and you can change them any time in Settings > Privacy or your device's settings.
- Privacy controls: privacy radius, Ghost Mode, who can see your profile, age and last online time, who can message you, and blocking.
- Notifications: choose which kinds you get in Settings > Notifications.
- Your data: in Settings you can download a copy of your profile data or have it emailed to you, and you can ask us for everything else we hold about you.
- Delete your account any time with Settings > Delete Account, or see how to delete your account.
- Depending on where you live (for example the EU, UK or California) you may have rights to access, correct, delete or object to how we use your data. Email [email protected] and we'll respond within 30 days.
6. Age and minors
You must be at least 16 to use FurMap. Members aged 16–17 always have a privacy radius of at least 2 km, can't turn on 18+ content, and aren't asked for their orientation. If we learn that someone under 16 has an account, we delete it. Our Child Safety Standards describe how we prevent and respond to child exploitation.
7. How long we keep it
We keep your information while your account exists. When you delete your account we remove your email, password, sign-in links, profile details, map pin and location, friends and follows, and your place in chats straight away. Posts and messages you sent to others may remain, shown as “Deleted User”, so other people's conversations stay readable; you can delete your posts before deleting your account, or ask us to remove them. Security logs and backups are kept for a limited time and then overwritten.
8. Security
FurMap uses encrypted connections (HTTPS), hashes passwords, offers two-factor sign-in, and limits who can access personal data. No service is perfectly secure; if we learn of a breach affecting you, we'll tell you as the law requires.
9. Where your data is stored
FurMap's servers are in the United States. By using FurMap from elsewhere you understand your information is processed there.
10. Changes
If we change this policy in a meaningful way we'll update the date above and let members know in FurMap before the change takes effect.
